DESIGNING A DECORATIVE SETTING AROUND A COLLECTION: IT’S A REAL ART!

Thursday 24 March — 17:00 - 17:45
The Talks — Hall 7

Description

Highlighting artworks without falling into the trap of a museum-like atmosphere, or elevating everyday objects to another level: brooms, everyday spoons or hangers, lovingly unearthed all over the world…These two aesthetes make marvelous use of the art of designing decorative settings around collections, with a common desire to infuse them with beauty and life.

Artistic Director & Consultant

From Paris, London, New York and Monaco, Charles Zana has been reaffirming his expertise as an architect over the past thirty years. He tastefully transforms residential interiors and public spaces. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed his signature style and strengths through working on spaces entrusted to him by his clients. He shares with them a cultured, resolute vision that is also that of an art and design collector, specifically of the great masters of 20th century Italian design. In the monograph « Charles Zana : Intérieurs » (“Charles Zana: Interiors”), published by Rizzoli in 2018, he reveals the uniqueness of his style. A stringent architect, he offers his fundamental principles throughout these pages: comfort, fluid passageways, an eye for detail, the principle of balance and harmony, discreet technology, and the ability to make the history of a space his own and update it, to better magnify it and give it a subtle twist. He loves creating a dialogue between his client/collectors’ artworks and their living space, like an exhibition curator. Following in the footsteps of the great designer-decorators of the 1930s, he conveys a certain French art de vivre through a contemporary lens. His rigor and the excellence of his project creations rely on teams of exceptional artisans, light technicians and landscape designers who share his values of elegance and luxury through details. Architect Charles Zana loves sharing his passion for art and design, first with his colleagues, but also with his students at the Ecole Camondo in Paris. In 2019, Charles Zana was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by David Caméo, Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs.

Daniel Rozenstroch

Artistic Director & Consultant

After training as an interior designer, Daniel Rozensztroch turned to lifestyle consulting. During the 1970s, he opened the “Oggetto” boutique in Paris, which shaped his view on everyday objects. Then, as a style director for 25 years at Marie-Claire Maison magazine, he designed many exhibitions in France and abroad around his favorite themes. He also took part in the adventure of the first concept stores in France: Résonances, and then MERCI, for which he was the creative director until 2019. His strong taste for utilitarian objects from everyday life led him to collect all sorts of them: wire objects, hangers, brushes, used glassware, herring pots and spoons. All his collections were used as the basis for an exhibition (at the Musée des arts décoratifs, at the Bibliothèque Forney and at the Université du Québec à Montréal – UQAM, among others) and the consequent publication of a fine book on the subject. Daniel is also the co-author of several books about the Art of Living, in particular from Flammarion. In his latest book, « Une vie avec des choses » (“A life with stuff”), Daniel shows us how objects can coexist, and, especially, how to make them part of your personal environment. His obsession found unexpected resonance in the Netherlands, with a wallpaper maker, NLXL, who created a collection based on several of Daniel’s fascinations: toothbrushes, Christmas ornaments and spoons (of course).
