Description

Exploring the connection between social and environmental impact, and how the two are inextricably linked, is critical in the pursuit of a more sustainable industry. Through showcasing the results of their collaboration, designer Sebastian Herkner, Marcel Müller of M2Rugs and Reto Aschwanden of Label-STEP discuss the need for change, transparency and the preservation of global artisanal skillsets.

Designer

Sebastian Herkner (born 1981) studied Product Design at HfG Offenbach University of Art and Design. During his studies he began to focus on designing objects and furniture, honing his keen sense for materials, colors and textures. For a short while he then worked for Stella McCartney in London. In the year 2006 Sebastian Herkner founded his own studio. Since that time, he has designed furniture, lamps and smaller items for manufacturers such as And Tradition, Cappellini, ClassiCon, Davis Furniture, Dedon, Duravit, Fontana Arte, Fritz Hansen, Gubi, Janus et Cie, Moroso, Poltrona Frau, Rosenthal, Thonet, Wittmann and Zanotta. Herkner also realizes interior architecture projects and museum and exhibition design. His works have won numerous accolades – among others the IF Award, the Iconic Award and the Elle Deco International Design Award (EDIDA). As Guest of Honor to imm cologne 2016, Sebastian Herkner provided the design for “Das Haus”. Maison&Objet has elected him 2019 “Designer of the Year”. In 2021 Sebastian Herkner won the most prestigious design award in Milan, the EDIDA award for Best Designer of the Year. 2022 Sebastian Herkner was one of the curators at Homo Faber next to Robert Wilson, Judith Clarke, Michele de Lucchi and Naoto Fukasawa commissioned by Michelangelo Foundation in Venice.

Marcel Müller is the founder and owner of M2 Rugs, an innovative label for exclusive carpet design. With a keen sense for materials, trends, and craftsmanship, he merges tradition with contemporary style. In collaboration with renowned designer Sebastian Herkner, he creates exceptional collections. M2 Rugs stands for bespoke, timeless rugs – crafted under fair conditions, with a strong focus on sustainability and quality.

Managing Director - Label STEP

Reto Aschwanden from Switzerland is Managing Director of Label STEP, the fair trade organization committed to the wellbeing of weavers and workers in the handmade carpet industry. Since STEP’s foundation in 1995, the non-profit organisation has been a pioneer in introducing best practice standards, implementing support projects and promoting industry sustainability. Reto joined Label STEP in 2005 and regularly travels to the weaving regions to meet personally with producers, workers and weavers. He believes in fair trade as an instrument for social and economic development. Reto is a regular speaker and panellist at international industry events and academic conferences.

Journalist

A graduate of Cambridge University’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership, Roddy Clarke is a design writer looking at the social and environmental impacts of design. With a background in restoration, Roddy covers topics such as circularity, responsible design, and the presence of traditional craft in a contemporary society. Contributing to titles such as The Financial Times and Forbes, Roddy also hosts and speaks across various industry events while also consulting with brands to help them navigate their way to a greener future through transparent and honest communication. Roddy also works as an interior stylist for a variety of brand-related projects.
