The spark behind Rudy Guénaire’s Suite 2046? Wong Kar-wai’s cult film In the Mood for Love.
Talking with Rudy Guénaire, who’s also the founder of the acclaimed restaurant group PNY, is like diving into a world where cinema, literature, architecture, and travel intertwine. It’s a journey toward the future of hospitality — one that preserves the best of yesterday while daring to step sideways toward tomorrow. Fasten your seatbelt: we’re taking off with a man who still prefers the seat by the airplane window.
PAST REVEALS FUTURE — How do you interpret the theme of Maison&Objet January 2026? How does it resonate with interior design today?
I’m passionate about philosophy, and when you read enough, you realize that most stories have already been told — what matters is how you read them. It’s the same in design: everything has already been done. Too often, creators get lost chasing effects or trying to be avant-garde. I admire those who look freely to both the past and the future — free spirits who stand outside of trends. I’m thinking of the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Antoni Gaudí, or even the writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
How will this vision take shape in your space?
Suite 2046 is a space out of time, almost suspended within the Maison&Objet fair with portholes opening onto a vibrant landscape of design.
A traveler at heart, I see the porthole as a window onto the world, a reminder of the nomadic spirit of travel, always gazing toward the horizon. With today’s dense, crowded planet, isn’t the ultimate luxury precisely to have an open horizon? Suite 2046 is also a window onto the imagination — a dreamlike room floating above the clouds.
What design forms will we find in your space this January?
I envision the room as a living scenario where ornamentation is refined, echoing the aesthetics of the 1920s and 1930s. Rather than extravagance, I prefer the purity of lines in an interior. The brands showcased within the suite will be carefully selected according to this vision.
What does the interior architecture of tomorrow look like to you?
An architecture that focuses on the essential and dares to dream big.
