On September 4th, the kick-off for Paris Design Week will take place at the Manufacture des Gobelins, the headquarters of the Mobilier National National Furniture Repository, on the occasion of the awards ceremony for the Prix Jeune Création (Young Design Award).
And we’re off! On the evening of September 4th, the awards ceremony for the Mobilier National-Jeune Création award will signal the opening of Paris Design Week, for ten days of a celebratory circuit throughout Paris. This year, the students from Campus Mode, Métiers d’art et Design Paris Fashion Campus, Paris Fine Craft and Design had as their mission to envision the facilities for a future eco-friendly materials library that was to be set up within a few months in the very same premises of Les Gobelins. The Mo·MADe Campus, created in 2020, brings together 50 training institutions from all over Île de France dedicated to fashion, design, and fine craft. Supported by the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs National School for the Decorative Arts, it pairs companies with institutional partners to promote these training programs to the industry. The award asks students to deal with a practical scenario, under real-time conditions. Twenty-nine projects were submitted from 11 different schools (École Bleue, Boulle, Duperré, etc.), involving 171 students. Their mission was to design the exhibition and viewing tables, offer a usage scenario for the venue, and determine the colors and materials for the overall atmosphere, as well as the signage and the logo. The public will be able to discover the nine winning projects as part of the exhibition. The new Materials Library will be a resource and research center for materials. The students of the Campus and professionals will have access to a veritable database that lists each material's origin, properties, and climate impact. This program has received support from Hermès International. The project that is selected will be included in the work done by the Chief Architect of Historic Buildings, who is in charge of the set-up within the Chabrol building at the Manufacture des Gobelins.
During Paris Design Week, the Mobilier National will also unveil the latest pieces from its collections, which are being re-issued in partnership with French furniture producers. These are prototypes that have emerged from their Research and Creation workshops (ARC) and which the Mobilier National wanted to make available to a wider audience. In the past, this institution partnered with Paulin-Paulin-Paulin to produce the full range of furnishings used by President François Mitterrand and designed by Pierre Paulin, or with Alki for Patrick Jouin’s Orria chair, designed for use by the Bibliothèque Nationale de France French National Library. This time, two gems from the collection, from 1968, will be reborn with the help of Maison Dada: the HG 80 lounge chair by Kim Moltzer and Jean-Paul Barray, and the Coquille chair by Alain Richard.
